Leghorn [Livorno, NW Italy], Friday morning,

Beautiful passage from Calais. Left Paris on Tuesday 24th and reached Marseilles on Wednesday. No time to go to Poste Restante. Went on steamer and reached Genoa after 24 hours. Left for Leghorn after 12 hours rest. Start for Naples to stay for day or so and then to Brindisi.

Brindisi, Monday,

Please address next letter care of Major Rossall, Vythery, Wynaad, Malabar Coast, India. Arrived at Naples at 6a.m. on Saturday. Saw Museum, Pompeii and Herculaneum. Have been on board the Massilia. Weather has been very cold. Garbutt left at Naples, so only eight now.

Sailed from Brindisi on the 31st. Splendid steamer over 2000 tons with 120 first class passengers. Nine bachelors. Passed over the place where Pharaoh is said to have crossed the Red Sea. [Describes routine on board ship]. Get to Aden tomorrow and start again for Bombay and arrive there in six days. There is a steamer from Bombay to Calicut where the hacks and bullock waggons will meet the party and then to Major Rossall's bungalow. Will write a letter to Jocky [his brother, George] as it is his birthday tomorrow.

Bombay, The Esplanade Hotel,

Reached Bombay harbour at 7.00 last evening. Was ill after leaving Aden due to a swell which was the tail end of a severe monsoon. One P&o vessel went down and another nearly lost. Passed a whale and flying fish. Saw yellow snakes about two feet long. Ostrich feathers at Aden nearly the same price as London. Theatricals on the Delhi went well. Drew the programme five feet long, illuminated with pictures of natives and characters. Start for Calicut on Tuesday by steamer.

Plantation House, Calicut,

Staying with Mr Hindi in a large bungalow about three miles from Calicut. Calicut is a large and pretty place with thick coconut trees. Have a large bedroom with five windows and a punka. Hills are about 28 miles at back of house. All start for them after dinner and ascend about 4000 yards to arrive at Rossall's bungalow. Had a monsoon on Sunday for about two hours. Tell what is done in the Richbourne case. Going out crocodile shooting now. All sorts of rare flowers that are grown in hot houses in England grow wild here.

Panora Peak, Vythery,

Received letters from addressee and Jocky. Guns arrived at last. Lang of Cockspur packed them badly and the rifle is damaged and there is no bullet mould or single cartridge. Not sure if Lang or Needham of Piccadilly is to blame. Received Mrs Morgan's letter in yours, will present it if I go through Madras. Bed and ground sheet not turned up. A native Niah has invited us to shoot and has promised 60 beaters. Tiger and panther near his place have taken away bullocks. On Wednesday we go to the Valley for a fortnight or so, so don't expect letters. Jocky is welcome to ride Gimblet.

Panora Peak,

Returned from hunting trip to find letters from Jocky and addressee and one from Missie [his step sister, Rosamund Lloyd]. Celebrated Christmas in a tent with a Plum Pudding. Tell Thick to get lawn mowing machine mended and put gravel down in front of the house and the road from the horse block to Derryfach cleaned and tidied. Left Panora Peak bungalow to shoot on Dec. 13 and reached shooting on the 17. [Describes experiences when on the trip.] Start from Madras in March. Enclose seeds for Thick to put in the hot house.

The Hump, Vythery,

Received a letter from addressee complaining she has not received a letter since the Red Sea. Laid up with biliousness. Rosall killed elephant after seven shots. Elephant with one tusk has killed a man called Hughes of the 66th Regiment. It is good of Jocky to take care of Aberpergwm and to keep those brutes in some terror. Please order plenty of fires at Aberpergwm. Write to Hotel Maurice, Rue de Rivoli Paris.

Panora Peak,

Made mistake in last letter. The Deccan not the Surat will bring us home as far as Brindisi. Start on the 5th February from Madras. Never had such a fine day for my birthday before. Had jungle fever and had to sleep under five thick blankets. The Europe Post was due last night but is expected tonight.
