This collection is from the library of Robert Davies Roberts and relates principally to family history and to the antiquities of Denbighshire.

Scrap-album

A scrap-album compiled, [1930s], by R. D. Roberts, containing press cuttings, bookplates and other printed items, [late 18 cent.]-1939, relating mostly to Abergele, with notes added by the compiler, pasted or tipped in on two copies, bound together, of Adelaide Anne Procter, Legends and Lyrics (London, 1888). The press cuttings consist mainly of a series of articles entitled 'After many years' by Thomas Jesse Jones, rector of Gelli-gaer, Glamorganshire, published in the Abergele and Pensarn Visitor, October 1928-March 1929, and which had previously been published in the same newspaper, 1924-1925. A letter, 1931, to R. D. Roberts from Sarah Elizabeth Jones, Llwyn, Llanbadarn Fawr, Cardiganshire, concerning the content of the articles, is tipped in on p. 92.

Ancient and modern Denbigh

A partially interleaved copy of John Williams (Glanmor), Ancient and Modern Denbigh ... (Denbigh, 1856), with an index by R. D. Roberts (between pp. 356-7) and historical and genealogical notes in his hand in the margins and on many of the interleaves. Photographs, bookplates, press cuttings and other printed items, [late 18 cent.]-1938, relating to Denbigh, together with a letter, 1922, to R. D. Roberts from John Hubert Aloysius Dormer (between pp. 36-37), are pasted or tipped in the volume.

History of Denbigh

A scrap-album compiled, 1936-1938, by R. D. Roberts containing press cuttings and other printed items, photographs and engravings, 1808-1938, relating to the town of Denbigh and its history, together with notes by the compiler and Arthur Foulkes-Roberts. Included are bills, 1842-1860, from local doctors and a chemist (pp. 46a-47, 110), and press cuttings from The Free Press, 4-18 February 1911, of a series of articles by A. Foulkes-Roberts entitled 'Denbigh Archives' (pp. 3-31).

The first of two volumes of scrap-albums compiled, 1937-1940, by R. D. Roberts containing press cuttings of a series of articles entitled 'Hanes Offeiriaid Plwyfi Esgobaeth Bangor' by Richard Rhys Hughes, vicar of Glanogwen, Caernarfonshire, published in Y Llan, August 1937-January 1940. Pasted in on pp. 6, 38, 66 and 150 and between pp. 152 and 153 are cards, photographs and engravings, [mid-19 cent.]-[1930s], mostly of churches within the diocese of Bangor. An index is added (pp. 180-181) in the hand of the compiler.

A volume containing the first of a limited edition of thirty copies of Frederick Arthur Crisp, The Parish Registers of Kegidog, alias St George, near Abergele, 1694-1750 (London, 1890). Genealogical and other notes by R. D. Roberts and A. Foulkes-Roberts are added or tipped in on f. ii verso, iv, pp. 1-52 passim. Also included is correspondence, 1890-1891, concerning the publication of the registers (pasted or tipped in on ff. i-ii, iv verso); press cuttings, 1928-1936, relating to the parishes of St George and Llanfair Talhaearn (pasted or tipped in on f. v verso, pp. 53-54); and the signatures, 1844-[c. 1845], of the Rev. Thomas Davies and the Rev. Charles Williams, curates of Holyhead, and the Rev. David Roberts, curate of Llangedwyn, Denbighshire (tipped in on f. iii verso).

Roberts, published mostly in Country Life (pasted on ff. iv, ii, iii and pp. 302-4, 307).

A volume containing transcripts, 1890, by William John Roberts ('Gwilym Cowlyd') from Llanstephan MS 182, part i, ff. 1-25v, one of a group of manuscripts which had belonged to Angharad Llwyd (see note under 'Tarddiad'). Included are 'Llyma ossedigaethau y Dernas o waith Dyfnwal Moel Mwdd ...' (ff. 6-7v), 'Llyma y modd i ranwyd ac i mesurwyd, ac y rifwyd Cantrefydd a Chwmwdau holl Gymru, yn amser Llewelyn ap Gruffydd ...' (ff. 8-13), and an English version of 'Y pedwar brenin ar hugain cadarnaf' (ff. 51-60). Interleaved between ff. 14 and 49 is an imperfect copy, wanting title page, pp. 1-6, 68-72, of George Owen Harry, The genealogy of ... James ... king of great Brittayne ... (London, 1604), with notes by 'Gwilym Cowlyd' on f. 50 and by R. D. Roberts on ff. 13v-14, 35v, 49.

A volume containing an offprint of Sir John Ballinger, 'Katheryn of Berain, a study in North Wales family history', Y Cymmrodor, 40 (1929), 1-42, which was given to R. D. Roberts by the author in 1929 in recognition of the help he received while correcting the proofs (see inside front cover, ff. i verso-iv). Genealogical and biographical notes on the Salesbury and related families, [c. 1934], in the hand of R. D. Roberts, occur on ff. ii verso-iv, pp. 2, 45-54 and genealogical tables I-III, together with press cuttings, 1930-1933, relating to Katheryn of Berain and Mrs Hester Piozzi tipped in on pp. 55-56, photographs of Plas Berain, Llanefydd, Denbighshire (3), 1906-1923, pasted on f. iv verso and inside back cover, and cuttings from William R. Pasted-in throughout are photographs, 1906, of Llechryd and Foxhall, together with miscellaneous press cuttings and photographs, 1918-1937, which were added later.

A volume containing an interleaved copy of Thomas Matthews, Gwaith Iolo Goch, vol. 1 (Llanuwchllyn, 1915), bound together with a copy of David James (Defynnog), Owain Glyndwr: His Life and Times (Cardiff, 1915), which was published as part of his volume Hanes Owain Glyndwr (Cardiff, 1915), with notes, press cuttings, 1920-1934, and other printed items added by R. D. Roberts relating to the lives and works of Iolo Goch and Owain Glyndŵr, together with a photograph, 1906, of Llechryd, Llanefydd, co. Denbigh.
