Biographical history
Yr oedd David James Jones ('Gwenallt',1899-1968) yn fardd ac ysgolhaig. Ganwyd ef yn Alltwen, Pontardawe, Morgannwg, ar 18 Mai 1899. Addysgwyd ef ym Mhontardawe ac Ysgol y Sir Ystalyfera. Treuliodd y cyfnod Mehefin 1917 hyd Mai 1919 yng ngharchar fel gwrthwynebydd cydwybodol. Ar ôl cael ei ryddhau, aeth i astudio yng Ngholeg Prifysgol Cymru, Aberystwyth, gan raddio mewn Cymraeg a Saesneg. Yma cyfarfu ag Idwal Jones (1895-1937), y dramodydd a diddanwr. Bu'n athro Cymraeg yn y Bari cyn dychwelyd i Aberystwyth yn 1927 yn ddarlithydd yn Adran y Gymraeg, gan dod yn ddarlithydd hŷn ac yna'n ddarllenydd. Enillodd radd M.A. yn 1929. Ymysg ei diddordebau ymchwil yr oedd bywyd y saint, ysgol farddol diwedd yr oesoedd canol, a barddoniaeth y ddeunawfed ganrif, ond ei brif waith oedd ar hanes llenyddiaeth yn y bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg. Ymysg ei weithiau ysgolheigaidd mae Yr Areithiau Pros (Caerdydd,1934), Blodeugerdd o'r Ddeunawfed Ganrif (Caerdydd, 1936, Y Ficer Pritchard a 'Cannwyll y Cymry' (Caernarfon, Cwmni'r Llan,1946) a chofiant Idwal Jones (Aberystwyth, 1958). Ymddeolodd yn 1966. Fel bardd cafodd gryn lwyddiant yn yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol, yn ennill y Gadair yn 1926 ar 'Y Mynach' ac yn 1931 ar 'Breuddwyd y Bardd'. Cyhoeddodd sawl gyfrol o farddoniaeth: Ysgubau'r Awen (Llandysul: Gomer, 1939), Cnoi Cil (Aberystwyth, 1942), Eples (Llandysul: Gomer, 1951), Gwreiddiau (Aberystwyth, 1959) a Coed (Llandysul: Gomer, 1969).
