Biographical history

Hugh Price (1793-1851), draper, of Dolgellau, Merionethshire, married Sarah Lewis in 1825 and they had three sons: the Rev. Hugh Lewis Pryce (1826-1895), the Rev. John Pryce (1828-1903), who became dean of Bangor in 1902; and the Rev. Shadrach Pryce (1833-1914). Shadrach graduated from Queens' College, Cambridge, 1858, becoming vicar of Ysbyty Ifan, Denbighshire, 1864-1867, Archdeacon of Carmarthen, 1896-1899, and dean of St Asaph, 1899-1910. He was HM Inspector of Schools in the diocese of St Davids, 1867-1894, and published Arweiniad i Eglwys y Plwyf (Dolgellau, 1867) and Hymnau Hen a Newydd (London, 1868) with O. Jones. He owned several properties in Tywyn, Merionethshire, and died on 17 Sept 1914. He was married to Margaret Ellen Davies (1843-1902), descendant of James Davies (died 1861), of Aberystwyth, Cardiganshire, who had three children, the Rev. Morgan Davies (1804-1867), Margaret (1812-1897) and Lydia. Lydia married Hugh Davies (died 1874) of Tywyn, Merionethshire. Their children were David James Davies (died 1856), Lewis Davies (1845-1870), Mary Elizabeth Davies (1849-1925) and Margaret Ellen Davies, who married Shadrach Pryce. Mary married David Griffith Davies and they had one son, Hugh Lewis Davies (1886-1952). Shadrach and Margaret Ellen Pryce had seven daughters, including Myfanwy Pryce (1890-1976), and two sons, Dr Arthur Meurig Pryce (1877-1919), and Lewis Hugh Oswald Pryce (1873-1930). Lewis Pryce studied at Cambridge, [1892]-[1894], and became Archdeacon of Wrexham and Ruthin. He undertook research into the family history, acquiring many documents.
