Artist Arthur Giardelli was born in Stockwell, London and moved to Wales in the 1940s. In 1948 he was one of the founders of the South Wales Group of artists, which later became The Welsh Group, and also of 56 Group Wales, of which he became president towards the end of his life. Maggie Knight was born in Melbourne, Australia. She moved to Leicester in 1992 before settling in Penarth in 1994, where she re-opened the old Washington Cinema as an art gallery. Award-winning landscape artist Peter Prendergast was born in Abertridwr, near Caerphilly. He moved to Bethesda in 1969 and taught at Liverpool School of Art, Ysgol Dyffryn Ogwen, Bethesda and Coleg Menai, Bangor. He was a member of 56 Group Wales from 1982 until his death.
