The manuscript of John Peter ['Ioan Pedr']: The Geology of Wales. Lecture delivered at the University College of Wales, December 19th, 1873 ... (Aberystwyth, 1874), together with other notes, mainly on scientific subjects.

A small group of the papers of (Morgan) Goronwy Rees (1909-1979), former Principal of the University College of Wales Aberystwyth, 1953-1957, including correspondence, articles, notebooks and photographs. They relate mostly to Goronwy Rees's literary work, his resignation as Principal of the University of Wales, Aberystwyth and his links to the Cambridge Spy Ring and Soviet espionage.

This file contains a copy of the radio broadcast in September 1953 by Goronwy Rees on his return to Aberystwyth as Principal of the University College of Wales. There is also a copy of the text of his inaugural lecture there, October 1953.

A volume of notes taken by Timothy Lewis at Dr J. Gwenogvryn Evans's lectures on palaeography at the University of Manchester, 1906-1907 (ff. 20-56); Lewis's printed registration book for the University of Berlin, 1908 (ff. 57-68); and a manuscript 'Bibliography of Material relating to the History of Wales' in the hand of E[dward] A[rthur] Lewis, University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, 1900-1901 (ff. 1-19).
The registration book lists lectures to be taken, October 1908-March 1909 (ff. 59 verso-60), but is otherwise unused.

Most of the letters, 1892-1916, are devoted to the writer's researches, writings and editing of Wales, Y Llenor, Heddyw and Cymru for which he solicits contributions from the pen of J. H. Davies. Several letters refer to the death of Thomas Edward Ellis in April 1899, the preparation of his biography and the erection of a memorial statue at Bala. Others relate to J. H. Davies's application for the position of Registrar of the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, and some to Edwards's duties as Chief Inspector of Schools in Wales.

Silyn's closing words suggest that Mary had recently been unwell. There are some minor differences between the two copies, but the essence of their contents remains the same. 'Mary Silyn Roberts spent a portion of nearly every year teaching summer school in Denmark from 1904 (before her marriage) to the end of the 1940s or the 1950s. Family members would occasionally accompany her, including her husband, Robert (Silyn) Roberts, and their daughter Rhiannon.'

'Henni Forchhammer was a prominent figure within the peace movement and within education in Denmark. Her papers, in which there are some references to Mary Silyn Roberts, are kept in the museum in [Copenhagen]. Mary went to stay with her in Denmark and Henni came over to Wales to lecture.'

The file contains mainly letters addressed to O. M. Edwards, and a small number to their parents or their sister. The majority of the letters were sent from St John's College, Cambridge, where the writer was a student, or from Aberystwyth, where he was a lecturer and subsequently Professor of History. They describe his activities, pursuits and surroundings in some detail. There are also some references to family news and events.

Papers, correspondence, printed matter and press cuttings, 1932-1999, accumulated by Sir Goronwy Daniel during the course of his life and career, and reflecting his many professional commitments and leisure interests. Many derive from his period as Principal of the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth from 1969 until 1979.
