Y Seint Greal

A transcript, dated 18 August 1851 (watermarks 1833), in an unknown hand, of part of the Hengwrt manuscript 'Ystoryaeu Seint Greal' (now Peniarth MS 11). The transcript consists of the whole of the first part (ff. 1-233) and the beginning of the second part (ff. 233-254), corresponding to Y Seint Greal..., ed. by the Rev. Robert Williams, M.A. (London, 1876), pp. 1-188.

Notes for the Mabinogion

A notebook used by Charlotte Guest, [?1839]-[?1845], mostly to compile lists of titles of notes for each of the Mabinogion tales (except for 'The Lady of the Fountain'). The most substantial list, for 'Kilhwch and Olwen', contains 379 potential notes (ff. 21-34), while a revised list of sixty-three closely corresponds to the titles for the published notes (ff. 46, 47, 48). Drafts of actual notes occur on ff. 14 verso-15 verso, 17, 18, 35-40, 42, 42 and 45. The contents of The Mabinogion... Parts II (1839) and III (1840) are listed on ff. 11 and 14 respectively.

Mabinogion manuscripts

Manuscripts of Lady Charlotte Guest, 1838-[1843], relating to her translations of nine of the twelve Welsh folk tales published as The Mabinogion from the Llyfr Coch Hergest, and Other Ancient Welsh Manuscripts, with an English Translation and Notes, Parts I-VI (1838-1845), namely 'Iarlles y Ffynnawn', 'Peredur ab Efrawc', 'Geraint ab Erbin', 'Kulhwch ac Olwen', 'Breuddwyd Rhonabwy', 'Pwyll Pendevig Dyved', 'Branwen verch Llyr', 'Manawyddan vab Llyr' and 'Math vab Mathonwy'. The manuscripts consist of transcripts of the original Welsh texts, some in the hand of John Jones (Tegid) and other scribes; drafts of Charlotte Guest's translations; and drafts for her notes to each translation. Most of the manuscripts consist of author's copy for the printers. None of the material relates to 'Breuddwyd Maxen Wledig', 'Kyfranc Lludd a Llevelys' or 'Hanes Taliesin', the three remaining tales published in the seventh and final part (1849).

Nine letters, 1842-1843, addressed mostly to Charlotte Guest, comprising a letter, 3 December 1842, from the Rev. Walter Davies (Gwallter Mechain), Llanrhaiadr, to Wm Rees, printer, Llandovery, relating to explanatory notes on 'Breuddwyd Rhonabwy' (ff. 1-2); letters from the Rev. W. J. Rees, Cascob Rectory, Presteigne, to Lady Guest, 3 January 1843, informing her of the existence of a copy of the Greal at Hengwrt (ff. 3-4), and 8 April 1843, forwarding information concerning the Greal, which accompanies the letter (ff. 7-9); letters from the Rev. T. Price (Carnhuanawc), Y Persondy, to Lady Guest, 7 January 1843, concerning his 'Quest of Charlemagne', with 'Notes for the Opening Note to Taliesin' (f. 5), 13 March 1843, containing criticism of her treatment of the 'Tair Gormes' and references to translations and proof-reading (f. 6), 6 May 1843, enclosing the M. Hughes letter, now f. 11 (see below), and advising her concerning the copy of the Greal at Hengwrt (f. 11), and 12 May 1843, relating to 'Breuddwyd Maxen' and 'Taliesin', and criticising Dr Wm Owen Pughe (f. 12); a letter, 1 May 1843, from [the Rev.] M[organ] Hughes, Corwen, to [the Rev. A transcript, [?1841], [in the hand of John Jones (Tegid)], of the beginning (ff. 1-8 only) of the Welsh text of 'Pwyll Pendevig Dyved' (entitled 'Llyma dechreu mabinogi') [corresponding to Mabinogion (1849), III, 7-13 (line 5)] (A7/1); together with drafts, [1842x1843] (watermarks 1842), in the hand of Charlotte Guest, of the eleven notes for the tale [Mabinogion (1849), III, 72-78], together with a further note, 'Preseleu (p. 59)', not in the printed version (A7/2).
The texts were first published in The Mabinogion… Part V: The Dream of Rhonabwy and the Tale of Pwyll Prince of Dyved (London and Llandovery, 1843).

A transcript, [?1841] (watermarks 1836, 1837, 1839), [in the hand of John Jones (Tegid)], of the Welsh text of 'Branwen verch Llyr' (entitled 'Llyma yr eil geinc or mabinogi') [see Mabinogion (1849), III, 81-102] (A8/1); an autograph draft, [1841], of Charlotte Guest's English translation, 'Branwen the daughter of Llyr' [Mabinogion (1849), III, 103-129] (A8/2); and drafts, [1842x1843] (watermark 1842), of ten of the twelve notes in the printed version [Mabinogion (1849), III, 130-140], with the notes on 'Harlech' and 'Five Divisions of Ireland' being absent (A8/3).

A transcript, dated 3 April 1840, of the Welsh text of 'Sir Bevis of Hampton' [or 'Ystorya Bown o Hamtwn'], in the autograph of Ioan Tegid [i.e. John Jones (Tegid)] (B2/1); together with a booklet, entitled 'Bown of Hampton', containing a translation of the first few lines into English in the autograph of Lady Guest, [1842] (B2/2).

Breuddwyd Rhonabwy - notes

Drafts, 1842 (watermarks 1842), of each of the twenty-nine notes accompanying the translation of 'Breuddwyd Rhonabwy' [see Mabinogion (1849), II, 419-444].
Also included is a manuscript draft of a further note, No. 28 'Rhun the son of Maelgwn', omitted from the final version, together with a printed leaf (pp. 453-4, corrected to 443-4) containing proofs for the same note, with annotations in the hand of Carnhuanawc. The notes were first published in The Mabinogion… Part V: The Dream of Rhonabwy and the Tale of Pwyll Prince of Dyved (London and Llandovery, 1843).

Drafts, [1841] (watermarks 1836, 1840), of twenty-seven of the notes accompanying the translation of 'Kulhwch ac Olwen', all of which appear in the published work, with the exception of No. 17, 'Glewlwyd Gavaelvawr' [see Mabinogion (1849), II, 319-335, 340-341].
The text was first published in The Mabinogion… Part IV: Kilhwch and Olwen (London and Llandovery, 1842).

Kulhwch ac Olwen - notes

Drafts, [1841] (watermarks 1840, 1841), of thirty-seven of the notes accompanying the translation of 'Kulhwch ac Olwen', all of which appear in the published work [see Mabinogion (1849), II, 335-366].
The gaps in the numbering (Nos 37, 39, 59) suggest the omission of further notes (see also A5/2, No. 17). The text was first published in The Mabinogion… Part IV: Kilhwch and Olwen (London and Llandovery, 1842).

Amlyn ac Amic

A draft, [1840]-[1841] (watermark 1839), of 'The Companionship of Amlyn and Amic...', in the autograph of Charlotte Guest, being her translation into English of 'Kedymdeithas Amlyn ac Amic' from the Red Book of Hergest.

Manawyddan vab Llyr

A transcript, [?1841] (watermarks 1836, 1838), [in the hand of John Jones (Tegid)], of the Welsh text of 'Manawyddan vab Llyr' (entitled 'Llyma y dryded geinc or mabinogi') [see Mabinogion (1849), III, 143-161] (A9/1); and a draft, [1841], of Charlotte Guest's translation into English [Mabinogion (1849), III, 162-184] (A9/2). Also included is a draft, [1841], for the single note, originally probably intended for inclusion in the notes on 'Kulhwch and Olwen' [Mabinogion (1849), III, 185-186] (A9/3).
